Actually the common names are of the utmost benefit to uneducated pet shop customers. The descriptive name makes it almost impossible for any idiot off the street to be able to match his fish with the correct price.
I like when you go in and they make up a common name lol, like Golden Shark even though the fish is silver and red...

man i wish fish all had 1 common name that will show what the fish is, good one is red tail catfish, its a catfish with a red tail or a tiger shovelnose, its a shovelnose catfish with tiger stripes
lima shovelnose should be renamed blackstripe shovelnose or something, and the asian rtc should be black rtc or something
