Son has many choices, West Point, USNA, ROTC (Full)....tough decision!

Son has worked hard to succeed. In doing so he has become an Eagle Scout, Boys State selectee, Varsity Lacrosse goalie, Honor Society, AP course load, and scored a 2000 on his SAT's. Proud of the kid. He has applies to West Point, Annapolis, Coast Guard Academy, adn ROTC at Rutgers, Georgia Tech, VMI, and Citadel. Heard from ROTC, looks like they are offering him a full 4 yr scholarship to Rutgers. He has 30 days to make a decision. He has yet to hear back from West Point and USNA. My suggestion is to take the AROTC at Rutgers. Youll still be a commissioned officer as would a West Point grad. He would still have summers, holidays, and experience a college life as opposed to Annapolis or West Point. He was selected to West Points SLS program this past summer. So, he has an idea as to what to expect at West Point.

He has some tough decisions....I personally would like to see him go to college and have a bit of a social life as well as be groomed to be an American Soldier. So proud of this kid its crazy!

Anyone with advice or suggestions would be great!
 
ROTC will allow him to receive a commission in the end but, no guarantee of becoming a line officer. USNA and West Point will give him a huge boost at not only becoming a line officer but, tons of cred in future promotions. Especially in the senior officer billets (O-6 and above).

A social life is fine, ...later. The competitiveness in the military should be foremost until he establishes himself in the ranks. There'll be plenty of team-building and socializing along the way both in school and at his various commands.

With ongoing and looming cutbacks in the military, all entrants need to focus on career first.
 
I have to agree with oddball. Focus on his military career now and college later. I've known some guys that similar options and chose the college route, two of them ended up being discharged after a college party got too wild and they tested positive for weed. It's not worth that risk. I'm not saying that would happen to your boy, he seems to have a real good head on his shoulders, but the best way to makedamnsure it doesn't happen is to not be anywhere near the situation. I'd go West Point. Good for him.

Thanks, and I agree. He just got an aceeptance to the Citadel today also. Cutbacks are huge and any ROTC scholarship will be huge. WP and Annaplois have cut down their middie and cadet classes by a quarter. Acceptance is near impossible anymore especially when almost half of the spots are billeted for foreign nationals and minorities. If he is to turn down a 4 yr ROTC scholarship and wait for WP or USNA, he may lose all options.
