Sony: Microsoft Wants Blu-Ray Xbox

By Chris Kohler

Microsoft is in talks with Sony about the possibility of adding Blu-ray technology to Xbox 360, reports the Financial Times. Speaking at a media dinner, Sony Electronics US president Stan Glasgow said the company is in talks with both Microsoft and Apple to add Blu-ray drives to their hardware.
Both companies have been mostly focused on digital delivery of high-definition content, Microsoft with Xbox Live Marketplace and Apple with iTunes.
Notes the Times:
A Blu-ray drive in a 360 would make Microsoft more competitive with the PS3, but it would also mean extra revenues for Sony’s electronics division. It would also add further cost to the 360, meaning a premium edition of the console could be necessary. A Blu-ray drive could be incorporated in its top-of-the-range Elite Xbox, or Microsoft could again offer a drive as a plug-in peripheral.
It could certainly happen, and Microsoft probably wouldn't mind paying Sony some money if it meant they could, at least in consumers' minds, take a bit away from what is Sony's biggest competitive advantage with PlayStation 3.
And yet I don't see it happening this generation. I imagine Blu-ray might be a better choice for Xbox 720.

If this idea hit the retail shops, a vast quantity of the new Blu-Ray systems would probably cark it within 12 months. It would make it a bigger contender for the PS3, but what about all the new games people would have to buy?

i bet ANYTHING that if it was a plug and play thing for 360 like the HDDVD drive was dang near no xgeeks will buy it

Why u ask ... good Question

a couple of weeks ago on x-play the news ticker read that 3.XX% of x-box users bought a HDDVD drive in the first place so why would a plug and play blue-ray be any different

Yeah, it is kind of sad after I built up my collection of dvd's soon I suspect they will be worthless. When will we reach the pinnacle of quality and definition on the multimedia products?

Microsoft says No to Blu-ray for Xbox 360

gainst earlier reports Microsoft said yesterday that they are not talking to Sony about getting Blu-ray drives for the Xbox 360.

Reuters got the word from Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360 that Microsoft is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience.

Microsoft is apparently betting entirely on digital distribution of media content. I think they will put themselves in a corner, only a handful people really have the bandwidth to get 1080p HD video over the net (you know who you are, you lucky Verizon FiOS customers).

The silver discs will still be with us for a long time. Blu-ray player prices are actually going up right now because there is no competition. This will drive even more customers to the Sony PS3 as it is still the best deal for a Blu-ray player - affordable and already future proof.

do u think that midrosoft will admit they want sony's product till they absolutly have to i bet if this does happen once the announcment is made it will be weeks before it hits store shelves so microsoft loyals won't have enough time to whine
