Soon to be empy 55G- stocking ideas?

Just got a 90G to upgrade my 55G SW tank. Also have another empty 55G, so one gets to be the sump for the 90G and the other is going to be FW for something. Looking for suggestions for the FW 55. Currently have one FW 55 that is mostly a catfish tank- Asian bumblebee, 2 upside down, whiptail, and one red eye red tail puffer the catfish leave alone. Would like some fish that would be active during the day. No mollies, guppies or other "pretty" fish please. I use them as feeders:naughty:.
 
Usually I can spend up to $40 per fish before my husband starts balking at getting more fish. Would like to keep stocking under $150 since I will need to pick up another filter and some decor for the tank. Number of fish is not necessarily a concern, I can be happy with one or 10 in the tank. i just like fish with personality. Currently I keep some puffers due to their interesting personalities.

Alright, sounds like a plan. Have you ever considered doing a school of exodons?
 
Thanks. Just did a little reading on them. Sound interesting. Would be like having a little school of piranha that are more active and colorful. I will check into them more.
