ok so definitely thought i just had a really colorful female JD since "she" has blue all over her gill plate (though i haven't vented "her"), but looking at all the pics of female JDs that have been posted lately i see that their blue is smeared and not spotted like the blue on mine is, also i think he has paired up with my female GT since they have been swimming together for awhile now and last night i turned on the light after they had already went to bed and saw that they were sleeping right next to each other in the corner of the tank soo here is a pic, what do you guys think (first pic is old one from when he/she was like 3in, and 2nd one is current at ~5in

thanks, yeah thats what im thinking now that he has kind of paired with my female GT, just threw me off because "he" definitely has blue spotting all over the lower portion of the gill plate and not just the upper part...

I'm no JD expert as this post will prove, but if they were two different fish I'd guess female on the first pic and male on the second.

haha, i know this is what is throwing me off, because this is my first JD so i was always told to go by the cheek being blue or not but this one is a little tranny haha, i dont know if its a male or if she just wants to be life partners with my GT, but its annoying because the one female fish i have in the tank (the GT) just has to cause trouble lol

I think that you JD is male. As you already stated the blue on the gill plate is a smear not spots. That is funny I think I would have noticed it when you posted that pic before, I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention

haha yeah nobody said anything so i dont think anyone noticed haha, n the only reason i was thinking differently is because of all the female dempsey threads that have been posted lately and then i saw him acting all lover boy-ish with my Female GT. im just hoping they dont lay eggs but it doesnt really matter because i have 3 senegals in the tank and they would make quick work of any fry, their territory is also right by the filter intake so fry will probably get sucked up anyways, if its even possible for them to have viable fry. i probably would like to grow out a couple just to see what a male from the pair would look like but im actually trying to get rid of these 2 so maybe i will find them new homes before they consummate their relationship lol
