Sorry for posting another ID confirmation post. I have looked at and read the stickied thread as well as researched online. I believe this gar to be a short nose. Am I correct or not? I would appreciate any tips on learning to ID this guy better. This gar belongs to a friend who is trying to rehome it, but people keep wanting to know the species understandibly. Thanks!

very interesting fish...the body is definitely shortnose, but the head looks somewhat gator-like. this could be a stunting/captivity effect where the snout is unusually small on a shortnose, but it could possibly be a hybrid.

if you can get more pics plus how large the fish is that would help. particularly of the head/snout region. nice fish!--

agree with solomon, either stunted fish, or cross. must say the body portion of the fish looks pretty awesome.

He is as long as a 75gal is wide (I can't remember off the top of my head). I know I have slightly older pics of him somewhere on my computer, its just a matter of finding them! If I can't I will try to take some with more head detail if he will cooperate tonight. He will be going to the Louisville Zoo (already approved and all) and will most likely go on display eventually in their meta zoo.

Ok, here is the head pic of him from the beginning of 2008:

When she got him in the beginning of 2008 he was at least 12", though I can't really remember too well. I know he has grown some since shes had him.

He is store traded (she traded three pinktale chalseus (SP?) for him). They had another there that was slightly larger and more dominant that looked the same. The other side of his nose/mouth was damaged by the other gar but has healed nicely though doesn't look 100% normal.

I used to work for a local fish wholesaler and we would get in different looking and sized gars all the time (ranging from 6"-13"). I would guess that is where he originated from.

can we have a shot fom the top? great looking fish, i can almost give a 100% ID that it is a shortnose gar.

that head morphology is interesting, but i would say it is a stunted shortnose gar. if the fish is as long as a 75g is wide then it is around 18" or so. the proportion of head size to body indicates it may have been stunted somewhere early in development, leading to the really short-looking snout.
a dorsal shot would be useful, but i would say shortnose gar given the most recent photos and information--
