Yea i relize i spelt the title wrong

Is there anyway i could make my two AC 70/300's on my 55 gallon "better" like by using a different type of filter media for more bacteria space? Do the sponges for my mech. filtering also provide bacteria space? Like can my bacteria grow on it, I relize it wouldnt be much but would it?

Should i buy different brands of filter media and place it in the filter somehow? like Eheim filter pads i belive they have coarse and fine, would i somehow be able to make a layer of course then a layer of fine then full the rest with bio-media? Which is the best brand for bio media? Ive read Lave Rock is VERY good for this and is dirt cheap for the most part, would i be able to bag it and place it in? Would it effect my ph at all?

Sorry for all the questions im just trying to make my filters top knotch :D

Thanks,
AQ

Ill respond to it now.

If you have it backed with sponges slowly remove some of them and keep replacing with some biomax or other ceramic media like eheim, they have some of the best, most effective and expensive bio media out there.. You can also get some blue-bonded filter media and cut it to size, put it in the middle and get alot more mech filtration. I run 1 sponge and the rest is biomax.

Another thing you can do is use a prefilter, i like hydro sponges. The tubes fit right onto most HOB intakes. You will have to clean these every few weeks or the filter will almost not pump water.

I would try and stick with filter media that is designed for the make/model or any cut to size filter media, almost all biomedia can be interchangeable and fit in most filters.

what i do is add filter floss under the sponge area.adds adds alot to the mechanical type.

Ive got an AC70 that works awesome...all I did was take out the carbon bag, leave the mech filtration and cram in heaps of bioballs/ceramic noodles. Works a charm!

That's what I love about AC, you can put in anything you want.
