Question for the guys that have been keeping fish a while. Do you still buy that small bag high price gravel at the LFS or do you get your substrate from another source like a home/garden center, gravel co, etc?

Any suggestions for good sources on the cheap? Any problems with getting gravel from home/garden centers?

I use sand. Pool filter sand is $8 for 50 pounds.

You get what you pay for:WHOA:. When I was setting up my 55gal. I had brilliant thought! Lets go get the gravel from home and garden store....... Well, I washed, washed, washed and WASHED! :screwy:We put into the tank.... OMG:eek: we never could get the tank to clear up.... After many many water changes. So we took down the tank and replaced with the correct aquarium grave and what a beauty we have.:)

Thanks R2,

That's the kind of info I was looking for. When I had my 29 set up years ago, I put in some peices of local petrified wood I had collected, thinking it would look cool, but it drove the PH sky high because of all the lime in it.

Your welcome. It seems we're fighting water issues daily. We have well water. Let me be the 1st to say... ITS NOT THE BEST!!!! It is extremely hard water. Our water drives me crazy:nilly:.

It does not take that much washing to get gravel from a non lfs clean. Just do a little at a time. It does take time but i like the look of gravel that has some size difference to it.

You can use gravel from either, it just depends on if you want to put the time into cleaning it. Washing small amounts at a time like stated above is the best way to clean any gravel, when its from a hardware store it just needs a little more attention

I use the big bag of pea gravel from lowes for $2.99. Pretty much the same thing as the fish store sells for $20 for half the amount. As for cleaning maybe it is takes more but I did not notice. Spent 1/2 hour cleaning and put in the tanks. Cloudiness in tank was completely gone within 1/2 hour.
