I find Paratheraps sp 'coatzacoalcos' very interesting fish atm. Most fish labeled zonatus, are more likely to be sp 'coatzacoalcos', but i've been told by German collectors who keep both species and collected them in the field, that there are significant differences. I always thought that they were geographical variant of P. zonatus?
I sometimes think that Don Conkels zonatus stock is infact sp 'coatzacoalcos'. I emailed him this question once, and was told 'until DNA sampling was done on both spiecies of fish, then we should question the validitity of sp 'coatzacoalcos'. I guess he is right, perhaps it's time someone should have a go at officially describing this species now.
In the UK we have sp 'coatzacoalcos (Rio Grande) and possibly (Rio Junapan). In other parts of Europe, i'm told there are coatzacoalcos variants from:
Rio Junapan
Rio Grande (identical with Junapan)
Rio Jaltepec (longer red zones in the unpair fins)
Rio El Corte (similar to Jaltepec, but higher body)
Rio Ajal (identical with Junapan)
Rio Zanatepec, pacific side (here they are sympatric with P. zonatus.)
All collected by German collectors.
The main reason for the topic was Mo's interesting fish. When i first heard about the fish, i believe they were originally described as Zonatus (Rio Carolina).
These are a photo of my group from Rio Grande, i have 7 fish.
Some people ask what they look like when adult. Here's a good example of a pair from Rio Junapan.
