In The Little Town Of Bedrock!
So I have a spare 10 gallon and I'm considering taking a shot at a saltwater tank. I am total noob at salt so please bare with me!

For stocking I like the look of clownfish so I was thinking maybe two of those, I don't know what there called but there body is half purple half yellow with the purple being on the head "side" (wrasse?), 1 Mandarin and possibly a Skunk shrimp? I'm not sure if thats a large bioload or not so I'm going to need your guys help.

I want to have a anemone for the clowns other then that though I have no clue what other corals (proper term?) to add.

What kind of lighting would I need for the anemone? Filteration, how many gph? Will I need a powerhead? I have a spare Emperor 400, is that safe to use in salt water and would it give me the current I need?

Any links to good reads will be greatly appreciated.

Go for it BUT,,, a ten gallon tank will evaporate quick and the salt stays in the tank so keep up on filling. Mandarin are hard to keep alive as they are finiky eaters, but will eat mysid shrimp frozen. Royal gramma???

Make sure you have good lights for corals I cant rember I think its 3-4 watts a gallon. Frogspawns, button polyps, star polyps, mushrooms, and leather corals, are all your easyer corals to start with. Anemone need a cycled tank so dont rush to fast, and when handling the foot can rip and it will die so dont move them. Be sure to add your calcium and iodone and the other, I also used purple up if you can find it.

Good luck it is not hard to do so go for it. My spelling also sucks old 30vvvv

Do I just use dechlorinated tap water then to fill it back up?

Alright, no Mandarin then. Your right with the guess it is the Royal Gamma. What about a Flame Angel, are they okay for a 10?

Should I worry about the anemone eating/killing my other fish, don't they sting their prey or something like that? The foot, whats that, where/how it holds onto a rock or something?

What do I need the Ca and I for?

Do I add LR while I'm cycling or after its cycled?

Thanks and pretty tank! :)

Yeah when your tank evaporates inbetween water changes.

I think a flame would do good in a ten gallon, just my opinion they stay small, and are pretty reef safe. And a flame and some clowns wont overcrowd.

Yah I think its called the foot, it like suctions down the anemone. If you just grab it to move it the foot will rip and the anemone will slowly die. And mine never ate any fish, but they have eaten goldfish, dont get the condylactics though they will eat everything they can grab. I think they are also florida anemones.

The CA and I are what coraly eat, and need to live, they will be little bottels I have the old KENT stuff.

Live rock will speed up cycling fast, so get it in there. Thanks man good luck.

So far I've come up with a fairly large list of things I would like to put in the tank, although I know I won't have enough room for everything what would you say safe/okay to put in?

Fish
Ocellaris Clownfish
Royal Gamma/Fairy Basslet
Yellowtail Damsel
Blue Velvet Damsel
Orange Firefish
Black Sailfin Blenny
Lantern Basslet
Pearly Jawfish
Flame Angel

Invertebrates
Banded Coral Shrimp
Skunk Shrimp
Astrea Snails
Florida Fighting Conch
Emerald Mithraz Crab

Corals
Pink Mushroom Leather
Toadstool Leather
Green Zoa
Green Star Polyp
White Feather Duster
Pink-Tipped Anemone
Frogspawn
White Pulsin Xenia
Valida Bush Coral

For lighting I was thinking two 18" Marine-Glos, does that sound okay?

Thanks!

thats waaaaay too overstocked and a flame angel in a 10g is NOT going to work. They get too big for it and sometimes eat corals when they mature. your damsels would fight each other, your two basslets will fight, and the firefish, blennies, and jawfish will fight for space. its nothing like a freshwater tank. saltwater fish need a ton more space than freshwater. Also your invert list is too crowded. the banded coral shrimp will kill the skunk cleaner. and there wont be enough room for the crab and the snails. also the leathers alone will get bigger than the tank. and with any sort of anemone in that tank there is no chance of other fish or corals anyway as it will get too big and they wont be able to avoid it and get stung and die. if you really want a clownfish pair then you should get one green bubble tip anemone and a pair of clowns (wait a few months if not more before adding the anemone and dont add the clowns until the anemone is in) also i would go with about 5 nassarius snails which are great cleaners and are fun to watch. if i was to stock it i wold have a skunk cleaner shrimp, a randall's shrimp goby and a hi-fin banded goby (they can share holes but cannot co-exist with their own species) and then maybe have a mandarin dragonet (would probably need more space unless a large amound of established live rock with a large pod population is in place) or a diadema psuedochromis and some zoas. but NOTHING more than that. the diadema may get too big and aggressive when mature. thats what I would do. but good luck!

;)

What if I went with;
1 Clown
1 Royal Gramma
1 Pearly Jawfish
1 Yellowtail Damsel
1 Skunk Shrimp
1 Emerald Crab

For corals I'm not sure then, what could I use other then Zoas and Stars? It seems like every nano tank I've seen has more then just Zoas and Stars...

Thanks!

for corals you could go with the nano polyp 5 pack, some evergreen star polyps and a neon pinneaple tree from www.Liveaquaria.com under nano corals... or you could mix and match a few things from the nano sections there. :D

Thanks for the link, I've found a few things in there that I like the look of! Like the; Australian Big Polyp (Red), Purple Passion Tree Coral, Taro Tree Coral, Giant Green Polyp Duncan, Evergreen Starburst, then some Zoas.

What lighting would you recommend? Brand names?

Thanks!

depends on the lighting

Thanks!

fix'd

honestly if you wanted to go with a reef choose a bigger tank, especially as a begginer
