Spawning and water changes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The eggs are very resistant and resilient to changes, when they become wrigglers, it can get a bit touchy.
I do small water changes every day and have done at least 3 since these eggs were put down.

The eggs became wrigglers yesterday.

I do water changes with eggs in my tanks all the time. I have never had it matter to the development of the eggs.

Awesome I left them last night only because they laid them around 9pm, my concern was with the babies. Also any tips on caring for the young ones. First time for me and how can I tell if the eggs are fertilized. What colour should they be?

You could set up a brine shrimp hatchery, there are some very simple ones available these days.
Along with brine shrimp, I also puree flake with peas in tank water, and use a turkey baster or pipette to send it to the school of fry when they become free swimming (don't feed while they are wrigglers)

Not sure of the color of fertile GT eggs.

Is it safe to do a water change tonight if my GTs just spawned today. Or should I wait??

Wait untill they hatch.........I would place the eggs in a seperate "growout" tank..............At home, I wait untill the fry hatch and then siphon the fry into a seperate tank.............

Eggs can take 3-5 days to hatch depending on species and temp.
If its just the pair in the tank, you can leave the eggs in the tank, if its a cichlid community, other tank mates may reduce the spawn, or get reduced depending on how aggressive the parents are defending the brood.
You can also slide in a divider to keep other tank mates at a distance, however free swimming fry will not respect its demarcation and often swim thru to their own demise.
I prefer to leave fry with the parents and observe natural behavior, but then I usually remove tank mates.
My Lepidolamprologus just spawned in a 125 community tank, and have all other tank mates pinned to one side, I have been removing them a few at a time to save their lives.
