Hi folks,

Today I noticed my two.severum doing something new. They have excavated all the sand out from behind some decor and created quite a dune. Could this be spawning?

It’s definitely pre-spawning behavior. What’s odd is that the super reds looks male, and the green is definitely male.

Super reds are heavily line-bred/inbred to get that color and as a result both males and females have patterning so it’s difficult to accurately sex them by markings. You’ll have to wait and see if it lays eggs.

Thanks, that's why I was surprised. The red has always been smaller, but over the last couple months, it was developing in a way that made me think male. I thought I was lucky to get get two males that like hanging out together. I've heard of two females doing spawning rituals together, but not two males. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Definitely seems like it. Any time my cichlids start doing this it means they are ready. Even the ones that dig most of the time anyway will ramp up even more.

Actually, though it’s more rare, male/male pairs happen. One just developed this week in my 150. They’ve dug all the sand out of one corner around a flowerpot and they went into dark spawning colors. They are defending the area from their tankmates. But they’re both definitely male. I need to get some video of it tomorrow. It was triggered by a male/female pair of Heros having fry in there last week. They went into broodcare mode but there were no other females in the tank.
