spawning tips,tricks and triggers

A big water change with very cold water usually gets em in the mood. Also playing around with the lighting schedule can help. Anything to simulate the time of year they naturally spawn. Massive cold water changes can simulate the rainy season for most fish. Also feed live food. My convicts happily breed in exchange for a brine ice cube.

Ive always heard that but where do you draw the line before you stress them, I mean if the tank is 80 and you fill it 50% with 55-60 degree water and the tank temp drops to 68-70 wouldnt that cause stress?

My rbp have never spawned in the year I've had them so I'm in no way an expert, I just want to know so I don't harm them.

Here's the pack, 5 in a 125:

They seem to be getting very dark and a lot of fin nipping lately

Well ime it's best to do the big cold water change when you see their breeding colors. It won't necessarily make them want to spawn, but it helps them get it done if they're already thinking about it. The real trick to successful breeding is to create perfect conditions. Clean water, warm temps, regular water changes. You have to make the fish believe that the environment is capable of handling more fish. Much like we don't want to have kids if we are living in poor conditions. Neither do they.

when i had my shoal:(. in my 300 i would do a 100 to 150 gal change. with as cold as it is up here it would sometimes drop the water in the ten deg range. they would sometimes just sit on the bottom. when the temp came back up id feed the **** outta them.
