GEL MIX RECIPE FOR HOME AQUARISTS
50 g Smelt
50 g Squid
25 g Trout Chow
15 g Shrimp
22 g Carrots
2 g or ½ teaspoon Spirulina
2 g or 1 ½ teaspoon Yeast
1-teaspoon liquid vitamin (baby vitamins)
1 50mg Vitamin C tablet (crushed)
2 x 400 iu* Vitamin E capsules
31 g Knox unflavored gelatin
170 ml water
Grind in a blender the following ingredients: smelt, squid, trout chow, shrimp, carrots, spirulina, yeast, all of the vitamins, and ½ of the water. Add the Knox gelatin to the remaining half of the water and heat this mixture to fully dissolve the gelatin. After the gelatin is totally dissolved, remove from heat. In a large mixing bowl add the hot gelatin mixture and allow to cool slightly, and then add the ingredients from the blender. Quickly mix these ingredients thoroughly together and pour into tray(s). Place tray(s) in the refrigerator to solidify. After the gel mix has solidified, cut into small cubes and place in airtight containers for freezing.
When you wish to feed out some of the gel, remove a small block and allow it soften a bit at room temperature for about ½ an hour. You should be able to crack the ice that has formed on the outside of the gel block. Cut the gel with a sharp knife into bite sized pieces for the animals that you intend to feed. Any left over gel in the tank should be removed soon after feeding.
