Which are the best Americans that can live together in a 120g without spending all there time trying to kill each other? Or is there not. Would be for a tank on show, if so how many could be added.

I find a group of Astatherines work really well as a group. I don't know about mixing species, but find a large group of one species in a shoal has worked for me, and found the look very satisfying.
Until I moved and gave them away, I had the group of Astatheros rostratum below, living together in a similar size planted tank, with a fairly heavy current.
I had heard people say rostratum were problematic in pairs or trios, but I believe because my group was large (15 individuals) and the current strong, aggression was none existent.

I grew them out together from about 1" for a few years before moving, and maintained a current that would keep vallisnera bent like the pic from their tank

These guys are both great resources for this

I keep Texas, Flowerhorn, midas , Red Devils, and vieja together. All do well together you have to learn their behavior but I have mine in a 200 gallon tank and yes they did fight at first but everyone had a pecking order. All these fish were 3"-15.5" most being 9-12"

There are lots of candidates for this type of set up.These tanks consisting of groups of same species cichlids are among my favourite type of tank.
Some cichlids are indeed quite social in the wild and do well housed this way in suitably sized aquariums.
Some cichlids will form harems and are also interesting to keep as a group of females and just 1 or 2 males depending on space limitations and species.
Social cichlids from south America include....

P.scalare
Severums
Discus
Geophagus
Biotadoma cupido
Festivums
Uaru
Some acara species

Central America
All thorichthys species
Lents
A,rostratus
A,robertsoni

Personal favourites of mine are thorichthys
I find them peaceful colourful and interesting to observe.

It can also work with larger cichlids but space requirements need to be met in order for success

Thanks for the replys. it has given me something to think about deffinately, i do like the look of the Thorichthys meeki tank. might have read up on them.

Rivulatus, severums, or thorichthys are all excellent choices. For the thorichthys I really like ellioti and maculipinnis.

Ellioti and maculipinnis are the same fish but agree they are very attractive.
They are also the most aggressive of the thorichthys group but still manageable in the right sized tank.
