Hi guys, as transparent as it may already be, i am rather new to all this. I have been keeping goldfish up until now and i am planning on broadening my horizons a little. I currently have a brand spanking new Juwel Rio 180 which i am keeping goldfish in at the moment.

I intend on starting a tropical freshwater tank with the Rio 180 and i would like those of you with good experience to point me in the right direction. What species am i open to?

I have been reading up a good bit and am already interested in the idea of Malawi Cichlids, but i would like to see what the rest of you guys think.

Thanks for your time and i really look forward to hearing you suggestions :) Andy

Malawi Cichlids are good and hardy fish....so are S/A cichlids aswell. no matter what species you decide to get, and the more you see the diffrent types of fish...your going to want more.

theres loads of options out there, you could have , malawis would be an option but we need to know what sort of stuff you like: colourful, oddballs, aggresive, predators etc.

I am really just aiming to see what other people suggestions are, so far the cichlid species have caught my attention due to their variety. As i am coming from an inexperienced background i wanted to see what other people recommended, so i can read up on them and play with some ideas and knowledge.

I quite like the Pseudotropheus Demansoi, would they be ok with the Yellow Labs? What others could go in with Demansoi? Thanks guys

I woudlnt keep malawi cichlids in a tank of that size, its too small and thered be agression issues.

Id personally start out with a nice commnal tank. I sure that a good LFS can helpyou out with some good hardy fish. :D

Yeah you think so, i wasnt too sure as to my limitations with them in terms of aggression issues. I know 180 litres is'nt a great deal of space. But it took enough comprimising with the folks even to get a 3ft tank lol :lol2:

What community species would you recommend then, anything in your experience that are exciting?

Andy

Hi, yeah i think malawi cichlids are a good way to go. I never really thought i'd have them myself but having got some free with one of my tanks, i've since added a lot more plus they are excellent breeders! Mine seem to recognise me when i walk past the tank and huddle together at the glass whichever side i seem to be at...a bit like that scene in Evan Almighty lol. I have yellow labs, rusty ciclids and moorii's mostly and they are friendly enough not to mention how colourful they are. WOW! I also have a tank with a pair of texas cichlids in, they are north american and just had a load of fry.....these tend to be quite aggressive when breeding so, although pretty and shimmery, i would definitely go for the less aggressive of the malawi type to begin with. You will need plenty of holey rock for the mbuna variety. I have some spare rock if you need it, if you are willing to collect it then you can have it.

Yeah i know, sorry the question was rather vague, i quite like semi aggressive species, at least something that can allow a little variety at the same time.

P.S if you are from Wirral im not far from you now, im on a supply ship at the gas rigs just off Liverpool lol :)

I like the SA/CA Cichlids for how personable they are. They seem to recognize their owners, beg like crazy and basically put on a show for us. I've never kept Africans but all the ones I've ever seen in other people's tanks don't seem to have the 'people-personality' that the SA/CA's do, they dart to the back and hide.

Yeah i must admit i do like some of the SA/CA Cichlids, i like oscars and the texas Cichlids, but i am not obviously spoiled for space to provide these lovely fish. I am seriously considering going tropical, but how do you find the Dojo Loaches in regards to your goldfish i see you have one in your tanks . Thanks
