So I am in the process of converting my 30 gallon SA/CA tank to a african tanganyika tank and I am in the process of making a 3d background. I would use pool sand for the tank but i want black colored sand. So i looked around and found that 3M doesnt make color quartz any more but this Company makes Spectraquautz I was wondering what grade i should get or if this stuff works also i can't find a place that sells it should I look at pool stores? or what?
Or if some knows of a better cheap colored substrate.:D

good luck, and if you find a place, let me know, I could use another 50lbs for when I transfer that 55G into a 90G. best choice option seems to be ordering from NJ which would be 45$ish shipping :(. I have colorquartz that I got from pound pool plastering in novi about 5-6 years back.
it's a great substrate, I got S grade which is very sand-like. the other size was T and was larger and more chunk like. ever break apart slate and get the little tiny pieces? kind of flat, but larger on the horizontal? that's what the larger grade was like (in pics, I never saw the larger in person).
it's very durable, I ended up rinsing it for around 45 minutes (my fault, the initial rinse only took about 10 minutes for 50 lbs) constantly stirring and have cories and loaches and snails all digging around and have never seen any sign of wear or loss of color. very smooth, it felt almost like silk as I ran my hands through it. perfect for diggers and sifters.

where did you find the NJ shipping thing? what website? and yeah ill be looking around if you type in spectraquartz it will come up and they have like 5 different sizes. and like 16 different colors.

I just did my 210 in black s grade and have a 50 pound bag in my garage. I can get it all day long. Where are you located? And the s grade is scary at first cuz it traps air really easy and floats like crazy but it eventually settles and is pure awesomeness.

Im locate in Livonia michigan so not to close lol. and is it ceramaquartz or spectraquartz? does it even make a difference? final thing does the silica matter?

The place I get it from is SCP which is a wholesale swimming pool supply company. Ceramaquartz and spectrsquartz are the same thing just different brands. Mine was spectraquartz and I could've poured it straight into the tank the stuff was so clean. Check SCP online or ask swimming pool plastering companies in your area.
