Thats cool cichlaguapote, I just know how some of the people are on this site. Some people are know it alls and don't even work with fish professionally. I sure as hell don't know it all, but I do work with and around people that have been in this business their whole lives. I'm glad to see that you aren't one of those people.

does raising the temp to 83 really make that big of a difference???? i have a jag pair in a 150 gallon alone. How high can I raise the temp without hurting them??

Fish are cold blooded so raising the temp will increase the metabolism. If you do that, you will need to be very careful with water quality, since that will increase the toxicity of any pollutants. I have had fish in water up to 88 and they were fine, but I really don't recommend it being that high due to the whole toxicity issue.

As someone mentioned fish don't all grow at the same rate. But would the dominant fish of the same species grow faster due to getting more food?

Also, does raising the temp to 83 degrees raise the hostility of the inhabitants?

Sometimes yes.

Also if you're raising it make sure it's well oxygenated i.e. you're filter/air pump is agitating the water a good amount. As the higher the water temp the less oxygen in it. But most filters should suffice in this.

Thanks Cichlaguapote, that's good information.

so to find a balance in high temp, toxicity and oxygen... would 80 be the ideal temperature??

I keep mine around 82, but 2 degrees won't make that much of a difference. Just ask yourself if you are already doing weekly water changes. If not, don't bother raising the temp.

Keep your temp at the suggested temp unless you're comfortable with adjusting it otherwise. It's all just going with what you think the fish can handle. I have always kept my tanks at around 86 for everything from piranhas to cichlids. But most of those cichlids have been SA, the only CA one I have right now is a midas and he's a brute so he might take it better than other CA fish.

It's always a gamble but might want to raise it a degree or two at a time. Some fish are hardy and can withstand huge temp variations and some will die from a little bit of change. Most are ok though.

Don't know about toxicity ask fivespeed about that. But if you have a high temp in your tank as long as you have adequete filtration/water changes/and that filter has decent flow you should be ok. I change my water weekly and never had a problem.

I'm not a chemist so I can't explain scientifically why ammonia is more toxic as the temperature raises, but I do know that it happens. The higher the temp, the more toxic ammonia becomes.
