I was at my LFS, and I had traded in a few Pleco's, so I could get another fish on store credit.

This time of year, my LFS seems to have 20+ tanks of Tetras, Platies, Mollies, Barbs, etc. and only a few Cichlid tanks. I remember they had Jewels, Frontosa, Oscars, Bala Sharks, Angelfish, Green Terrors, Geo's, and Spilorhynchus. I wanted a peaceful cichlid for my Blood Parrots, and well, the guy working has always been pretty knowledgeable in the past and had correct information. He assured me Spilorhynchus was South America. So I got about a 3" one for free.

I looked it up when I get home.... and it is African. :irked:
Is this a horrible mix? If so, anyone want to trade for a peaceful SA Cichlid?

well its going to turn into a nice size predator. what size tank? i dont see it being a good fit to be in with blood parrots but i had one that held his own with lare predatory fish. hard saying i guess.

Nice fish. Somewhat rare to find pure ones. Most C. spilorynchus sold in the Eastern United States are hybrids. Some sort of cross involving an Aristochromis. Your guy looks to be the real deal though. The defining characteristic is the dark spot under his eye, sort of like the stripe that other haps get.

While not super aggressive, he will get very large and will eventually need a 6' tank. It will take a while though. From 3", expect him to take 1.5-2 years to reach 8", then another year or two to reach a foot.

Thanks for the advice.
He will be in a 125 gallon for life, if no one wants him. I'd prefer he be with other Africans,
and would also prefer to trade, rather then sell him. I could take him back to the lfs, but I doubt anyone would buy him.
The guy said he's been there for awhile.

Yeah, they definitely are there to make sales for the most part. I have been there when people buy a single schooling fish, or someone with a small tank buys two Oscars. They just tell them they will need a bigger tank, or general advice. Nothing specific and actually helpful long term. It is the only place to get fish locally, as well. The other option is Petsmart, but it is 40 minutes away. The Petsmart workers can't tell the difference between a Blood Parrot and Goldfish, so I never ask them questions.

Yeah, I know it haha. I'm sure the workers would get fired for "interviewing" customers on their tank size and everything anyway.
I found a different fish store the other day (where I got my big BP from in a diff thread) and the owners said they won't carry large fish, such as Pacu's or Bala Sharks. They will special order them for people, but they always interview them first to make sure they know how to take care of them, have big enough tank, etc. I thought that was really awesome. I would do the same thing if I owned a Pet Store.
