I tried to shop vac the gravel out of my tank and it all was going well until I went to empty the vacuum and put the tube back into the water, not realizing that even though the vacuum was off it still made a siphon. There was about 5-10 gallons of water all over the place. Its been a few days and Ive steam cleaned my carpet but THE SMELL IS HORRIBLE. Does anybody know how to get rid of the fish smell from the carpet?

hmm My 180 busted in Feb and after my efforts of stoping the water there was still about 50 gallons or so on the floor....The carpet guy came out and after we huffed and puffed we moved the 180 (with about 600+lbs of gravel/rock/wood/sump/stand)forward and he removed the pad under the carpet to allow it to dry.
POINT being maybe the pad under the carpet mildewed/molded and THATs what your smelling. Cause i dont smell anything in my apartment.

Mix white distille vinegar at 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water. Use a sprayer and spray it accross the carpet until it feel mushy (between damp and wet) and let it sit.

If you have a stream cleaner, sucks all the water again in about 30-45 minutes. It'll smell like vinegar for a day or so, but the smell as well as the fish smell will go away after a day.

IF NOT, repeat until it goes away.

Vinegar is acidic, acid kills mildew, molds and bacteria. Bacteria is what causes the smell

Get a carpet cleaner and vac as much as possible and then put large box fans on it for several days. Thats what I did and after it dried the smell dissipated. I tend to start cleaning and when I refill I get preoccupied and forget sometimes.

I waited and sprayed fabreeze on it and the smell seemed to go away. but ill be sure to try the vinegar thing next time, that sounds like it would work great ,thanks for letting me know.

If you can't peel the carpet back, and dry it out along with the carpet pad, then,
Dump a bottle of "Fabreeze" where the water spilled...

It does have ingredients that neutralize odors too. As long as you can get it, where the water got to, you'll be alright...;) :D
