I have a 55 gallon tank cycling now. Eventually I want it to house a BGK, Senegal Bichir, Jack Dempsey and an eel. I was thinking about a Striped Peacock, but now I'm thinking that if it really doesn't get more than six inches, the JD and Bichir will make a snack out of it. Would the Peacock be okay, or can anyone suggest a better eel?

Striped Peacock eel will be fine. they get up to 12".

The BGK is going to need about 180 gallons if you plan on keeping it for life... there are other knives that don't get as big... if you are planning on getting a BGK and upgrading later then I would say it doesn't matter what kind of eel you get.

Okay, thanks everyone. I knew that 12 inches was possible, but I'd heard 6 was more likely. I'll be going with the peacock then.

I will be upgrading the bgk. Right now I just don't have space, but I'll be moving in the next two years and I plan on using that as an excuse to get a huge tank. :) everything I've read says that bgk are slow growers, so I should be okay.

I think a striped peacock eel would be fine. They're the smallest of the spiny eels and the other eels like the tiretrack and fire eel would grow to large for a 55 gallon anyways.
