Gday guys. I’ve just got back into American cichlids and I pick up a 13” dovii from the shop an hour ago. I’ve just noticed his dorsal fin is split all the way to his back, it’s almost as if it’s parted there. Will this heal on its own? TIA

When it's split due to damage, it often repairs in time in good conditions. Ime, though, when there's a gap like that it's probably a genetic imperfection, just part of the specimen, and not something you can 'heal'. In some species, or at least from some parents, it seems you get a certain number of offspring that have the imperfection.

If you research it, with fin damage there's normally a window of time where certain biochemical events need to take place for regeneration. If the process begins within the window you'll probably see regeneration, if not you probably don't. That's one reason some people say this or that will heal and some people say it won't.

My impression from your photo, though, is it's genetic feature, probably not something that will 'heal'.

...I had a betta once, back in my early and naïve days of fishkeeping, when I overstocked and kept all kind of crazy fish together. Kept a baby arowana in the same tank a little too long and woke up one morning to the betta having his fins all bitten off (at which point I put the aro in another tank). His tail was just a stump, nothing of it left at all. But all his fins regenerated, including the tail. My go to fin damage treatment in those days was aloe.
