Hey guys, wanted some opinions on a Convict tank I'm setting up for breeding, that will house a female long term too; the sizes im considering are:

1) 36 inch length, 12 inch width, 10 inch height

2) 30 inch length, 12 inch width, 12 inch height (standard 20gal long)

According to the tank calculator these sizes both amount to 20 gallons roughly, the difference is probably negligible but which size would you choose?

The longer one, most fish prefer a larger foot print especially when breeding, and are not to fussed with height. So option 1.

I'm certainly leaning towards option 1, the only thing thats swaying me toward option 2 is that I have a spare Fluval U4 filter thats about 12 inches tall and would fit nicely into the 30x12x12, as opposed to buying a U3 for the 36x12x10 that wouldn't give me as much filtration :S

I'm avoiding sumps, external filters etc for ease of maintenance

You can get a fluval c3 (hob) they are great and good for up to a 50gal tank. They run about $40 on amazon and have a 5 stage filtration. The c4 is junk though from the two i had the c3 did better.

go for the first. 2 inches height is not worth 6 inches length, especially when breeding cichlids
