Both of these are the same Hydro Sponge filter, and were used at the same time, each in a different tank.

Any idea why one turned more of a purple-ish colour after 3 weeks, whereas the other one remained grey? Or rather, why did it even change colour at all?

did you throw any chemicals into the tank? looks like it got dyed.

no chemicals or medication or carbon...
the only difference is that the one that turned purple has a ph of 7.0, filtered with a wet/dry sump
and the regular one is a ph of 7.6 with canister filters

 i wonder if that has happened to anyone else with these sponge filters?

That's weird. It's never happened to me even when I use meds that stain the water and silicon. Maybe give the company an email

i keep AC sponges in my ac70 for one, but also my overflow box. In the 70 they go from white to that maroonish color to brown as they get gunked up and dirty. In the overflow they just turn maroon before i need to clean them out as they start to get clogged. Also Overflow one is exposed to a window so it gets sunlight.

So i guess in the end either one tank is less stocked or the reddish one is getting a lot of sun?

try rinsing in hotwater, see if that works?
