I just want to be sure, but I feel my Hydro V sponge filter from my 125g should be enough to seed a 40g. Typically I would use some of my Pond Matrix, but I'd prefer not to crack open my FX5 unless I had to.

Perfect. I used two of the same sponges to jump start my 500. Wring it out I the water column before adding fish and it goes even faster

The sponge filter is in the 40 Breeder, but the fish I was going to pick up has been sold. They can order one but it will be 1.5 weeks. How long will the bacteria survive without any sort of bio load? If needs be I can grab a few rainbow fish to throw in there, or I can put the sponge back in the 125g, I'd prefer to help the canister filter get established though.

Can not give you an exact time on bacteria surviving but life would be short. Add Rainbow fish but don't add too many.

If it's that short, I'll add the sponge back to the 125g for now. It would probably be tomorrow before I picked up the Rainbows.

Yeah I would just keep it in the 125 until the night before, or morning of the day you pick up the fish. Then like everyone said just wring out the sponge filter in the 40 and bam-instant cycle.
