Hi All,

Recently i bought a sponge filter . Although to me its more like a HMF. On inspection it seems there is only holes in the bottom of the pipe .

Every other sponge filter i have seen seems to have multiply holes running up the length of the tube. I know the double sponges that i've got do.

Is there any purpose to this? To me the only part of the sponge being utilised is the bottom? Is it worth adding 5 more sets running up the tube?

Thanks.

Personally, I would swiss-cheese that thing., to within an inch or two of the top of the sponge. Be prepared for it to require more frequent squeezing-out as it will fill/clog up more frequently....which means it will be filtering much more effectively.

So drill holes you mean ? I don't mind cleaning it as it's fairly easy but just wanted some advice.

Yes, I would drill holes along the length of the inner tube, just make sure you don't get carried away and go too high on the tube. The top-most hole should be at least an inch or so below the top of the sponge.

If it were me, I would also get an extension for that uplift tube. Taller tubes will flow more water in an airlift, and exhast it further away from the sponge itself for better efficiency and circulation.
