Sponge filter lift tube is too tall

I got a sponge filter for a bin that I plan on raising brine shrimp in, but the lift tube is WAY too tall, like 3 inches too tall, can I just flip it on it's side? Should I just take the lift tube off? Should I just leave it be despite the fact the bubbles don't fly out at the top?

Laying on it's side is OK, won't really affect it overly much, but why not just cut the tube down to size?

I just swapped it out with another smaller one

either hack saw it down or remove it if you want to keep the sponge size

I heard it wouldn't work then, it's a little 5 gallon bin in going to raise brine shrimp in so it doesn't need all that much
