I just bought a sponge filter at tongs. The people that worked there told me it was rated for 15 gallons. I put it in my 20g tall that I am setting up for juvie discus. I see particles flying around it but not getting sucked into the sponge. Do i have to wait for awhile ?

Sponge filters are more of a biological filter than a mechanical one. The sponge provides a place for bacteria to grow. Don't expect it suck up large particles, not going to happen.

HOB filters are not bad for the money if you need some mechnical filtration

I agree on it being a better bio filter than mechanical but a good clean sponge with some good "pull" will do an excellent job sucking up particulate. I use them in our freshwater qt/holding sys at ADG and from my exp. a clean sponge will inhale quite a bit of funk.

I don't know about gallon ratings on sponge filters. Ours are homemade from pvc pipe and overflow prefilters and are powered by a huge compressor pushing 30+ sponges at any given time.

To me the current source will impact the effectiveness more than anything.
If using an airstone uplift tube scenario it is important to make sure the airstone is placed as far as possible down the tube. If the airstone is too near the top then you create no flow into the sponge and are essentialy just "blowin' bubbles" IMO.
