sponge filter question

Not to hijack your thread but are sponge filters really that good and cheap? I mean you could just attach a 300 GPH+ powerhead to it and get a lot of filtration going on?

the power head should be fine........i think they use sponge filters mainly for fry and discus, is that because you want alot of bio filtration w/o alot of water movement? now that i think about it using just the air pump should be enough.

I'd run just an airline. Is this a 20 long, or a standard 20? I might try a small (smallest I could find) powerhead on a 20 long, but it's not needed.

really depends what youre keeping in there. a powerhead will provide more flow in the tank and ultimately, better mech filtration (but you still have to vaccum off the sponge), but if your stock isnt used to a lot of water movement, an airline might be a better way to go. my fry tanks and growout tanks have sponges in them. with a single blower running them all.

Howdy,

This filters my 10 gal :)

well i was set on using the powerhead but my azoo sponge bought doesnt fit any powerheads i have so either i have to diy something or go with an air pump

i know its only a fry tank but im thinking the ph would be mpre effective and a lot less noisier then a airpump splashing bubbles all night( the tank is in my bedroom)

If you use an airstone in the sponge filter, it's much quieter. I've had shrimp and fry tanks with just air, and everything was fine.

I have a friend who has a 30g with no less than 150 fry with a single sponge filter. They're growing like weeds!

I think you would be fine w/ just an air pump.
