Can some explain these sponge filters to me I'm totally confused on how this is even possible. I have a small sponge filter and it's rated for 50g and I just bought another one that is twice the size and it's rated for 20g???? I'm confused. How do you really rated a sponge filter?

Probably a manufacturere thing. There is also the possibility that the pore size might allow it to hold more debris, thus a higher capacity rating. There really isn't a good system for rating them. You would simply have to calculate the expected surface area that could potentiall hold pacteria/debris and make a guess. Just buy a big one and call it a day. LOL

+1. ...sponge filters work great..but capacity varies on reticulation

I should have said "BASED" on reticulation, wich is density of the sponge

I just thought there was a better calculation to figure these out. I see it's not so easy :=)

not really too difficult,, just put the biggest hydro sponge you can stand looking at in the tank (or if it's a bigger tank, maybe 2),, and if they are going to be the MAIN filter try them with a powerhead , for better mechanical filtration:)
