i'm setting up a 135g and was planning on using a couple sponge filters in the corners. i was going to use a AC 70 powerhead but was wondering if anyone has tried pushing water through the sponges. i was thinking that by using a prefilter to clean the water and hooking up the venturi you would push oxygen rich water into the sponges and maybe increasing the bb effectiveness. any thoughts or reasons this wouldn't work? also wondering if this would provide pretty good bio filtration (won't be the only filter but have heard these things can run large tanks by themselves)

I think if just going for BB in an Ac70 you'd get more area for BB to grow if using potscrubbies on top of a sponge- with the prefilter. I love the potscrubbers- someone here had a link that showed the pot scrubbers were in the top 3 I think for total surface area, and the top for cost.

I have run large tanks on air driven sponge filters alone. One of the main reasons I use air rather than a powerhead is because I can run the hydro5's in an emergancy with a battery powered air pump but the other advantage is, of course, the air itself. If you use an air stone at the very bottom of the lift tube they are surprisingly effective for both bio-and mechanical filtration. I lnow of several breeders...LFS...and distributers who use nothing else and have healthy clean tanks at all times.
