I'm currently running a 65g with a rena xp3. Here's its setup bottom to top.
Fluval pre-filter media
2 30ppi pads
2 20ppi pads
fluval ceramic rings
fluval ceramic rings & the stars that came with it
2 top-fin large filter bags (empty, just had them laying around so used them) & rena micro polishing pad

I think this MIGHT be enough, at least for now. My stock is 2 senegal bichirs, 1 jack dempsey, 8 tiger barbs. I do at least weekly water changes, sometimes I do a quick smaller wc in the middle of the week, mainly to clean up the sand. But I think as the sen's & jd grow (they're all 4" & under right now) I might end up needing more filtration.

I have a powerhead that I'm thinking about cleaning up and turning into a sponge filter. Would this provide enough extra mechanical/biological filtration to be safe about things, or would I still end up needing to add something like an AC70 or (like I'd LOVE to do) a second xp3? I'm trying to keep it low cost, I'm not really in a spot to build a sump, it'll be awhile before I can add another 'real' filter, so I'm exploring this option for now.

Wow another NC MFK dont go off my advice only been into monsters for a year but i think that would be good for a while more is always better no such thing as enough in filtration from what i understand. I am going to put 1 sponge filter in my sump for each fish so if i ever move i can use them for transport prob a stupid thing to do put if i never use them for that it just adds filltration to my tank.

yeah thats kind of what I'm figuring.

I'll probably pull the thing out of the closet this evening and see if it even works, then start figuring out how I'll go about building it.

My wife is going to think I'm crazy:screwy:
(until I tell her that it might save us from buying another filter for a lot longer:grinno:)

nah I don't have an AC, I'm considering one as my second filter down the road. Right now its just the xp3.

edit: but looking at that product, it says 'for powerheads.' Is it just an aquaclear product that attaches to a powerhead to act as a filter?

I did buy a magnum HOT for my 20gal....maybe I can find a way to take the water polishing setup from that and attach it to the power head...probably not:\

I have the same problem... i don't want to spend too much on a filter either but if you have another powerhead try and use a milk carton for a DIY project? im not sure, Or you could spend a little and get this : http://cgi.ebay.com/Sale-Odyssea-CF...871?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43a1a2fbaf i dont know how good they are but it does 500 Gallons an hour, i will try and do a bit of searching :)

wow an fx5 rip off lol i think i might try one of those and see if they are any good

I've seen the odyssea name mentioned around here once or twice, but can't remember if people were liking them or hating them.

I'm a sucker for name brand though...if I'm not gonna build it myself, I'm probably gonna buy a well-known/established brand. I know I might be able to get the same for less...I just for some reason can't ever let myself believe it.:screwy:
