How do sponge filters work? Is the air from the air stone what makes the bacteria grow. Or will they work the same with a powerhead pushing water through. thinking of making my own, can they also be in the water side ways. wanting to use lustar sponges and pvc pipe and a powerhead and use it sideways in the tank, what do you think? has somebody done something like this and how does it work?

They work by drawing water through the sponge. Your idea will work fine.
