how do I keep my sponge filter down, it keeps floating to the top?

Turn the air off, squeeze the foam pad, under water, until you stop getting bubbles from it, drop the filter to the desired spot (away from the glass to prevent "dead zones"), and turn the air back on.

is there a special kind of sponge to use?

If this is a home made filter, post a pic.

i took a piece of 1" pvc with a cap on the bottom, the cap is sticking out of the bottom. could my sponge be too big?

Can't tell without a pic. But if all this home made filter has is the foam sponge and PVC, it's floating because it doesn't have a weighted base.

how about putting some type of fishing weight or rock on top of it???

The weight is a plain old white ceramic floor tile from Home Depot.

Placing the weight on top will only cause the filter to continually tip over.
