I plan on setting up 4 20L to begin breeding a some cichlids:
Kribensis
Sajica
Rams
Firemouths
Have been doing some research and am still undecided about sponge filters and if i should invest in them? I have read they are good for breeding cichlids and that they do not "suck" in the fry. also is this brand from Big Als a good brand or not, Lustar Hydro sponges. Let me know.

I bought a sponge filter for my 20 gallon bredder i was planning on running this and a small HOB while there where no fry then turning the HOB off but there is a bit of java moss on the intake for the HOB and so far no fry have been sucked up, so i can't really say if the sponge is that great but my water has remained pristine with the sponge and small HOB

sponge filters will work really, well if you run them for long enough and let them grow a nice bacteria colony, within the sponge. What i would do is put the sponge in one of your tanks, that you know is healthy and cycled, and just squeze it and let it soak up some of that water, and then setup the sponge filter in the other tank, and that will speed up the bio-filter in the new sponge. Also if you ever setup another tank you can just squeeze in some on the stuff thats in the sponge into a new tank and kinda use it as a jumpstart, much like bio-spira, may not be as quick but sure will get the job done.

hightimez- i meant a 20 gallon long.

Awesome just have heard people talk about them in breeding setups and thought i would give them a shot.

Night flight what size should i get for the 20g longs? Also should that be my only filtration source?

what number Lustar Hydro sponge should i use, size i mean?

I use powerfilters and canisters on my spawning tanks for the extra water flow but I love the hydro sponge filters for the fry tanks. The only diffferance between the Mk 1 and the MK 5 is the diamiter of the sponge itself. The 2 is rated for a 20 gal tank but personally I always go at least one size bigger. I add a small round air stone to the unit to increase efficancy of lift tubes and season the sponges for at least 2 weeks in an old AC on one of the established tanks.
