Sponge Filters - DIY or Buy?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I buy mine, since they're cheap, and I'm terrible at doing anything myself when it comes to creating something. However, I have made my own sponge filters, but I was unhappy with them. I used old fish food containers, tubing, and gravel.. pretty much free.

But considering the largest Hydro sponge filter is $9 or so, you may as well buy them and save yourself the effort, I think. A quality airpump with a couple of outlets is only $25 or so, and if you have some valves you can easily operate 3 sponges on a single air outlet..

just buy one. diy ones don't work as well imo, and sponge filters are incredibly cheap...yet they are so effective i don't think i'll run another large tank without one.

i am going to attempt to make one in a few days, i am going to put it in the corner and i am going to make PVC fo infront of it, so the sponge shows and there will be the tup for the out put of water. hope it will look decent. . . . .

Needing some sponge filters. The actual sponge filter looks EASY to make.

So do most of you DIY or buy your sponge filters...

but if you are debating on making or buying one, depends if you like making things or if you like buying. . . . . both will be like the same thing in this case :)

best of luck if you make one:nilly:

what is IMO again?

LOL I get a lot better prices for hydro5's and extra sponges. The full kits are 5.00 and the replacement sponges are 2.00 if we buy in bulk. The MA600 twin outlet air pumps are about 8.00 each...all from the same distributer.

I'll agree with a couple of things here....

I wouldn't run a tank without one and my fry tanks have nothing else...

The problem with making you own is consistancy and holding the foam down.
You could always drill a lot of holes in a piece of tubing and then silicone it to a piece of tile and then slip the sponge over it but one of the great things about using them is that you can swap sponges and get some instant bio filtration for new tanks. thats hard to do with a DIY design.
