The most growth I have seen in smaller fish is with the use of sponge filters. Not sure exactly why but they work for them but do sponge filters work as good on a larger scale? I'm talking specifically about size here power feed, water change, and sponge filters only will it grow monsters?

Sure, why not?

Sponge filters are essentially for biofiltration. So, as long as you have enough sponges to culture the necessary bb colonies for said monster fish, then it will be an effective filter.

I think one reason that fry grow so well is because they can graze micro organisms off of them between feedings. I have Hamburg Matten filters in 2 of my 120's and think they do a fantastic job.

No, all my fish were bought this big and since Dec I have been running sponge filters, but the first ones were garbage so I had to redo it all over again, finally finished. I see no reason why my fish wont continue to grow and be healthy or for someone else to do the same or even better.

Which were garbage Swiss tropical? If I copy your setup want to know what to avoid

probably more anecdotal than anything else, but I've tried sumps, overhead filters, internals, hobs; sponges, and in order, I'd rank them:

Sponge
Overhead or Sump
Hob
Internal
Canister

With sponges, you get arguably the safest option; massive biological potential, and surface agitation alongside benefits to surface grazers; plus the ease of cleaning, and cost effectiveness. I've also seen massive DIY sponges in cichla tanks.
