depending on the size of the sponge...some only run sponges in their tanks and they are way bigger than 29g...

+1, i've ran a large sponge filter on a 29 gallon many times, i have a 29 gallon that i use from time to time for quarantine and i have an extra sponge filter in my 55gal grow-out tank that i pull out and put in the 29 gallon, works fine. Just don't throw a little sponge filter made for a 10 gallon in there and expect it to do great.

Are you talking about a sponge filter connected to a powerhead?

For my Q tank, I use an UG filter with a powerhead on the riser tube. When I use to breed my fish, I used the same set up for the fry.

I run sponge filters on a 20 long, 40, and a 55 grow out and have for a long time. The 40 and 55 both have Maxi-Jet powerheads running them.

As long as you get the right sized sponge, you will be surprised how well they work. Sponges can support huge colonies of bacteria.
