I've seen a lot of people talk about using sponge filters, is it really as easy as cutting an appropriate sized sponge and putting it where the filter cartridge would be or is there something else to it? If it was possible to do this and save some money that'd be great but im not holding my breath :nilly:

The ones I use are made for aquariums and are available from most online retailers. Hydro sponge is the name I believe. They're dirt cheap and great bio filters, but ugly...

This is typically what people are talking about when they say sponge filter. The flow usually comes from air rising in the tube from an air pump, but they can also be used with a powerhead. They are good for bio-filtration, but aren't great at mechanical filtration as they do not have super high flow rates when used with an air pump.

You talking about using a sponge filter or adding floss to your power filter? If it's the latter, I always fly my cartridges and cut to fit some floss that I buy by the gigantic role. Also, I stuff some bio-media in there as well. Just make sure the flow stays solid! Don't feel limited to what the brand and store sells to you. Just think biological, mechanical, and chemical (if you need it) filtration and build/customize your filter to your specific needs. Best wishes!

thanks everybody, i think im going to order one of them for my tank soon, in december im upgrading to either an AC70, AC110, or an emp 400 and then ill put one of these in too to help the bio filtration - ill also try out the floss idea for my current filters
