I have two big sponge filters in my tank and tossed them in my sump. Will I have the same effect other than surface agitation? I already have tons of surface agitation.

I just wanted my rays to have as much as possible room to swim plus they keep moving it lol

Beneficial bacteria will stay the same or does it matter if it's in the tank versus a sump

I would think it would be the same. As long as it makes contact with moving water should make a diff

Most rays appreciate the bubbles, you may have air stones though. That said I've come to loath air pumps so I don't run any.

Thought it would be a clear look for them. Mine don't really use the air bubbles mine just go against the current and fly like an eagle lol

My rays liked to use it as an elevator to raise them to the surface quickly, then they soar down the glass or suction cup to it. If your still running air I wouldn't be concerned in the slightest, if they are riding the current chances are surface agitation is fine. I keep my sponge filters in my sump without air running to them and I'm curious if they would be effective as an instant start up, I'm not sure that they maintain a similar bacteria colony when unpowered.

There two months old so they ride for a bit it's a 28" high tank and they're 5" but I catch them sometimes. I've seen a lot of setups without air just sumps. Do rays need to swim like that? Mine do but my friend has teacups reticulated ones and they never do that. He said not all rays fly like an eagle lol they do fine though I've seen them.

I honestly don't like airline in the tank anymore that's mainly why. It looks so much bigger my tank since I had them on two corners and freed good amount of space.

I run a 110 sump of K1. I keep sponge filters in it for emergency use and have never had an issue with them not being ready. So far emergencies have always been I bought a fish with nowhere to keep it but another tank.

All of my rays have distinct personalities. Some enjoy flying more than others, but they all scale the glass to some extent. Mostly when they are hungry or when my black fem hybrid feels like messing about. Her favorite things to do these days is scale the glass then swim upside down near the surface, that and spitting water out of the tank at night.

The Rays got spooked for like an hour was cleaning damn brown algae in the tank but after that they swam a lot. I know they're scared of in my cichlids since he's huge about 10" but he's harmless he doesn't even care for the Rays. They swim up mainly at night when the cichlids are sleeping.
