hey guys i have a powerhead rated at 180gph and i'm going to try a sponge filter. my question is how long should the tube and or sponge be? ideally i'd like to have it run from top to bottom in my 55gal tank.

What brand are you talking about? Personally I use hydro5's and drive them with an air pump. In that case I end the lift tube about 2 to 3 inches below the serface of the water. The reason I don't use powerheads is so that I can run the sponge filters on battery power in an emergancy. Air pumps draw a LOT less current than a powerhead.
If you use a fine air stone and possition it all the way at the base of the hydro then you end up with more than enough water flow IMO.

not sure on the brand name, i got it from walmart. and since i already have the powerhead i was just going to use it, two birds one stone kinda thing. so you're saying to keep the tube and sponge short?

The only reason for a longer lift tube would be to increase waterflow in an air driven sponge filter. With a powerhead to really dosnt mater. I've seen them run attached directly to the powerhead.

so i made my filter today and basically what i did was take a 8" piece of pvc and fit it to the powerhead intake. then i took the pipe and drilled it all over where the sponge is covering it. and i took filter fiber and lined the inside of the intake pipe with it, then plugged the pipe with styrofoam. if anyone knows if i need to do anything different please let me know.

I like to have a sponge filter running just in case I want to start up a tank. No cycling.
