I am planning to add sponge filters to my tanks for extra filtration. I know they can house beneficial bacteria in them, especially the original dense sponge, but after a while they can wear out ez rip apart easily

I was wondering can the Coarse sponges house just enough beneficial bacteria efficiently as dense sponges. Dense ones is more durable and stronger

hmmm im not quite sure what you mean but ill say this lol:

I love sponge filters and feel they do an awesome job.
My lfs only uses sponge filters and they are literally like falling apart and full of algae and the tanks are clean.
I clean mine when i do a water change with water from the tank.

Coarse sponge filters work just as well as fine ones. With proper maintenance (occasional cleaning) a quality sponge filters should last for years. Check out the Hydro Sponge line of filters.

Im going to put two on each of my tanks. One coarse and one fine. I see some lfs with just sponge filter do just fine w/ clear water. And yes their sponges are growing things out of it.
