Sponge in a Canister

What sort of sponge do I need to use?

Can I just use new (unused) sponge bought from the supermarket, then cut into size of the trays?

Most of those supermarket sponges are cellulose sponges and say 'Not for Aquarium use'

They have mildew resistant chemicals on most of them so it's dangerious to use them. Check the pond supply areas for large pads that can be cut to shape along with large sponges.
