Canada eh?
Hey all, decided on upgrading one of my tanks for more fish :)

Ive been thinking for a while about putting a thin layer of sponge on the glass floor of the tank and then putting my gravel on top.

The reason i want to do this is so good bacteria can develop in the sponge and along with the Bactria that already develops in the gravel itself, im hoping this could be a useful little trick in helping keep gravel cleaner and more beneficial for the water chemistry in general.

Just wanna see what peoples opinions on this would be befor i set up my new tank, will it help? any flaws i haven't thought of?

honestly it sounds pointless... BB grow just fine on gravel... it wouldnt help filter any more than an extra inch or so of gravel would... and if you have plants the roots will take hold in the sponge and you would have to tear them apart if you ever wanted to move them...

Good points indeed, i knew if i asked here i would get some opinions that i didn't possibly think of before.

Thing about it is i don't have any real plants in this specific tank. (my snails would destroy em) and as for not being able to clean em, the sponge i found is 4"x6" rectangles and there only about 1/4" thick so they will be really easy to grab and clean when i need to.

thnx for the opinions guys really apritiate it . :headbang2

any1 elese?

it needs water flow for any bacteria to live in it

Not true, bacteria develops everywhere in the tank. If that were true then how would it develop in the gravel which we all know it does.

obviously if the water is running through the bacteria then its going to filter much much more, don't get me wrong.
