Sponges for DIY filter safe or unsafe?

Look on the packaging and manufacturer website. If their bacteria resistent then no go, should be ok. U can also buy bulk filter padding online or at some lfs

the pot scrubbies from family dollar or dollar tree work well. like stated need to watch for bacteria resistant material and obviously no pre soaped sponges.

Those cellulose sponges are too dense to be good filter media plus they break down too quickly. I'd also be wary of possible chemicals.

pot scrubbers are better; those are easy to clog and tear
