they are not rare just smaller numbers than usual. mostly due to damming up rivvers. they are too big for the average tank, only large public aquariums can house them. they are good eat'n though. the only bone they have is their skull.
its not a catfish, some folks just call it a spoonbill catfish because its scaleless. if you ever have the chance to eat some, dont pass it up. its the best tasting fish ive ever had. i have a deep freeze full of it.
my wife dont like fish but she eats it. i trick alot of folks who come over on fish night and say they dont like fish, i tell them it's not chicken after they eat it. its kinda like tofu, if you cook it in oil that has fried chicken, it's taste like chicken
yes thats a paddle fish its more related to setrgeon and they are endangerd because they have very good eggs like stergoen and people pay a high price for them but you can snag them and eat them they do taste great and only have one strip of cartolidge going down there back but they are endangerd so in sertain places you can't eat them
and nobody really keeps them because they get big and are filter feeders and need food like plankton and other small tings and i thinks its illegal in some places
not sure about them being endangered....at the lake those are always the first people on the water and the last people off, and they have snagged some HUGE fish, I have never tried it but I have heard it was really good, I'm too afraid of snagging a gar
if you snag a gar, just onhook it. i've been snagging for over 10 years and ive only hooks one gar. you're more likely to hooks a channel cat or a stump.
