Depending on what you feed him and the dimensions of your tank.
I will go with a ball park guess of 5 months
My spotted gar eats market shrimp, beef heart, and feeders (feeders every other week). He has grown maybe .5" every month and last month he started slowing down to maybe .25" ea month. Currently he is 9.5" and is in a 150gl

When they are young they go threw growth spurs. I'm not sure what you could feed them to slow down their growth. If your patient and can wait till the Pros wake up they will be able to give you loads of info. Look for Demjor, waylin and a couple of other guys that seem to know their stuff

Most preds get pretty big, but you might be able to squeeze a red tail barracuda or a pike odoe. Both have teeth. The ace (barracuda) might not be to good for that size tank to tell you the truth.

Try a pike cichlid, bichirs, a Jack Dempsey would be good in a 75, or you could do a cichlid community which would be cool. If you were looking for a gar type, try to find a spotted pike characin, also known as a mosaic or Hujeta Gar. They arent true gars, but look and act like them. Really cool hunters, get about 10"-1'.
