Planning on using several LED spotlights on my tank, has anyone tried this. It creates a "wavy" effect on the tank, not sure if this would be good for long time viewing or not.

I've seen this on many tanks, and I personally like it. While many people prefers a brightly lit tank, I prefer my lighting more subdued. I no longer care for the look of fluorescent lighting, although it does make fish colors pop, but rather prefer the look of LED lighting. I especially like the "wavy"/"shimmering" effects it has on the water giving that natural sunlight going through water look. I also feel that most fish do not care for an overly bright environment and feel more secure and comfortable in a tank that's not so bright and have dark areas

I am using them on a couple of tanks. You don't get a shimmer effect from them since they broadcast over a wide area. You get it from regular LED lights using lots of smaller chips because of the space between chips where there is very little light hitting the surface.

The focused beam of light that an LED puts out is what makes the shimmer effect. I personally love this and it seems it's amplified by any surface agitation. Lots of cool shimmers and shadows.

I would think a spot light would do this depending on the wattage / lumens.

I've found the effects are most intense with the LEDS close to the water. The farther away they are, the less noticeable it is.

They are huge. compare them with my son chair ;)

Just a note on the "shimmer" effect LEDs create. I have a seizure disorder and can not look at that for long periods of time. So if you are sensitive to flickering lights it may not be for you. I only bring it up cause I spent a bunch of money on lights before realizing my sensitivity. Just something to think about
