Hi everyone! I came a crossed spoted gar in one of my regular fish store yesterday and i found it very fascinating so i think may be I can put it up with my arowana as a tankmate. So can you tell me is that even possible for them to live together happy ever after?:D

Thank a ton phillydog1958 ! I'll buying a spoted gar later this evening,, Thank again!

No experience with gars myself, but here is one possible scenario

Watch that combo. My arowana basically killed my gar. Not out of aggression, but they went for the same food, the aro striking as aros do, spooked gar, broken back.

Edit: another quote on the previously quoted incident

Yes, I had them together with some other fish, tank is a 170G 6x1.5x2.5. I got the aro in March at around 8", never had any problems between them, in fact they totally ignored each other, until the incident when the gar broke his back, this was in June.

I know a lot of people keep gar with aros and other things, but these random incidents can spook gar and lead to injuries. If I keep another gar I'll probably keep it with other gars, and bichirs...it just isn't worth the risk IMO.

Just make sure you have enough room and you should be fine. I have a Florida gar and Floridas are pretty mellow in my experiences and given a size balance between your aro and your gar, it should be a winning combination;).

mine have all been fine together for years, but yours could be the perfect storm. i agree with xander. that crazy search feature and that google website can do some amazing stuff. i would venture to say miraculous...

Isn't MFK apart of the research process? I agree that one should do some personal inquiry beyond MFK but I'd also much rather get an account of a particular experience (re: fish compatibility) from individuals who are passionate about fishkeeping and have experience...like those individuals on MFK. The information and insight this forum provides is often invaluable. :grinno:

That is apart of why this web space was established...right??? At least he's asking before he jumps into it. We were all newbies to certain species of fish at one time or another. I'm not saying to not encourage searching...But we can be a little easier on the facetiousness.

because imo it's not a good combo but i myself have an unadvisable combo so am in no position to say "don't do it". hence i'm hoping the search tool would do it for me.
