So my spotted Bass is getting a larger tank. Going from 20 gal to 55 gal. I have searched the forum somewhat but I have a few questions. First off, I filled the new (used) tank with water to check for leaks. My next job is the transferring of the fish. I have read about cycling and what not but does a Spotted Bass need the same treatment as a delicate tropical fish? I plan on siphoning almost all 20 gallons of the existing tank into the new one and then filling the rest with filtered, treated water. I basically did this when I first caught the bass and he was fine. Also, what structure works best here (rocks, limbs, manufactured?) Next, I would love to put another fish or two in there. I want a crappie and maybe a bream or catfish. Any suggestions on what combinations work best here? Lastly, the newer tank I got didn't come with a lid or anything else. Is it possible to just buy that? I plan on using the old filtration system and adding a second one. Will that do the trick? It seems most of the topics in here are for a little less resilient fish. Am I right?

You need some type of filtration. At least bio if not mechanical too. Did you have a filter on your 20g? If so, the filter may be cycled, use this on your new tank and you will be off to a good start.

You can buy a couple of sponge filters and run them in your old tank for two weeks, then transfer them when you do the swap and this will cycle your tank with BB. All native bass are resilient but you still need to care for them as they were tropical. I have a large mouth and have had a small mouth, both would claim there territory and fight anyone. Spots are aggressive so get fish that can hold their own of the same size. Any cover will work, rocks, wood, so on.
